TOEFL® iBT

The Premier Test of Academic English Communication

The TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) iBT® test measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level. And it evaluates how well you combine your reading, listening, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks. In Indonesia, the TOEFL® iBT (internet Based Test) has replaced the TOEFL® PBT (Paper Based Test) and TOEFL® CBT (Computer Based Test) since 2005. Changes in the TOEFL® format to internet based also caused changes in the TOEFL® score which is now 0 – 120.

 The Development of TOEFL® iBT

TOEFL® was created by ETS (Educational Testing Service) in Princeton, New Jersey, United States in 1964. The aim of the creation of the TOEFL® is to filter out students who enroll in universities that use English as the language of instruction. Since 1964, the TOEFL® has undergone format change 3 times.

The TOEFL iBT® test has 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. During the test, you’ll perform tasks that combine these 4 English communication skills, such as:

  • read, listen and then speak in response to a question
  • listen and then speak in response to a question
  • read, listen and then write in response to a question

The total test takes about 2.5 hours to complete, but you should plan for 3 hours, allowing 30 minutes for check in.

Scoring Process

ETS uses both human raters and automated scoring methods to offer a complete and accurate picture of a test taker’s ability.

TOEFL iBT® uses automated scoring to complement human scoring for the 2 tasks in the writing section. By combining the assessment of human raters who aim to assess the content and purpose of writing and the automatic scoring method that assesses linguistic features, ETS ensures the consistency and quality of the TOEFL iBT® score are always guaranteed. The speaking session and the writing session are rated by more than one human rater to maintain scoring objectivity.
